The devastation and destruction that Puerto Rico faces from Hurricane Maria is widespread, dangerous and heartbreaking. The vast majority of the island is still without power, leaving millions of people without electricity and basic needs. One of our Northwell Health scientists went to Puerto Rico shortly after the hurricane hit to secure her mother. With help from her colleagues, she was able to bring over 200 pounds of supplies with her. She saw first-hand how grateful communities were to receive basic supplies and wanted to do more.
Especially as the holiday season is around the corner, the immediate goal is to provide more than 500 lamps to Puerto Ricans in remote shorelines and mountain areas by mid-December. LuminAID will supply the lamps for $10 each through their "Donate a Light" program, and Northwell scientists and physicians will distribute them with the help of local contacts, ensuring that these efforts go straight to those who need them. Please consider supporting this goal to "Light up Puerto Rico".
